Motivating Mondays: Secret Millionaire!

18 Apr

I cry every Sunday night.

Because I watch Secret Millionaire. And you should too. This is one reality show that doesn’t require it’s participants to eat worms, start fights, or compete in ridiculous obstacle courses. This is quality reality TV in a world of quantity reality TV.

Hi Mom!

Secret Millionaire is a new series on ABC about millionaires that go undercover and volunteer in impoverished communities. The millionaires tell people they are doing a documentary on volunteering. Sneaky….. (Creepy head nod)

After a week of living on a welfare budget and spending time in the community, the millionaire reveals they are a millionaire and they drive away in a Porsche, laughing.

No, I’m kidding.

They present each organization with a check for tens of thousands of dollars (cue: waterworks). At the end of the show, they do a follow up to tell you what the organizations did with the money (cue: the ugly cry).

Last weeks episode was awesome. It featured a self-made millionaire/entrepreneur, Ali Brown. Normally the millionaire is sent to a poverty stricken communities somewhere in the United States, but  Ali was sent just two miles from her home in Venice, California. She had no idea how much help was needed in her own community. There were several organizations she had never even heard of.

One organization was Beauty Bus, which offers free in-home beauty services to not only the chronically or terminally ill, but also to their caregivers. I mean, who doesn’t feel better after a mani/pedi?

This show is so inspiring and motivational! It shows that even one person can make a difference with just a little effort. And, you don’t have to be a millionaire or even a thousandaire to help. Just donating your time can make a huge difference. This show makes you want to do just that: get out in the community and help!

I’ve already started my volunteering spree by serving meals in the local soup kitchen and as a medic for Special Olympics. Even though I’m not getting paid monetarily, I feel so rewarded! And it’s addicting. Seriously, the more you help, the more you want to help. You’re high on volunteering endorphins!

Ahhh volunteering!

My name is Tricia and I’m addicted to volunteering.

Welcome Tricia!

I was surprised at how many opportunities there are to volunteer in my community. I had no idea! Here’s a list of a few (of MANY) volunteer organizations:
