I recently discovered the joy of Hiking Yoga. It’s a brilliant concept. Hiking – good, yoga — good, so why not combine the two?! I mean, if you’re going to work out, why not get some fresh air while you’re at it?
Fitness buff and founder, Eric Kipp got the bright idea to combine hiking with yoga and started Hiking Yoga in San Francisco in 2009. The company has grown exponentially since then and now has locations nationwide! Eric leads several of the classes himself and I got to meet and chat with him during my first hike. His passion for fitness and helping others achieve their goals is really inspiring.
For anyone who dreads working out (i.e. me), this is the workout for you. You don’t have to be a hiking or yoga extraordinaire. HikingYoga welcomes all levels of yoga, from beginner to guru and will coach you along the way on improving your poses. I have done hikes in two of their Bay Area locations and I felt so great after! Like bursting out in song and signing from the mountain tops great.
Each hike is 90 minutes and you stop four times along the way to do some yoga poses. Not only is it an awesome workout, it’s a social workout. Bring your friends and/or meet new people on the hike. Another bonus: Hiking Yoga uses Perkville to track your hikes so you can earn free ones. It’s like a frequent flyer program for exercise! And you can earn free hikes for recommending your friends, which is how I discovered Hiking Yoga.
